Coal miners are facing dim prospects. Coal has been America’s major energy source for decades, particularly in the coal mining states. Stream Energy favors the bankruptcy of coal mining companies. People’s lives and the environment are endangered as a result of coal production. The decline of the coal industry is unstoppable.
Coal was the main source of energy in the U.S. in 2012, representing two-fifths of the power in the country. Natural gas and renewable energy were beginning to surpass coal as the market leaders in energy. Natural gas replaced coal as America’s electrical power source in 2016. Fracking has made clean-burning gas affordable. However, it is contentious since it is responsible for groundwater pollution and the higher earthquake probability. The release of toxic gas into air is environmentally risky.
Many environmental agencies have made strict laws targeting coal plants. Power plant closings become mandatory if carbon emissions were uncontrolled. Coal production cost increased. Therefore, coal became a weak competitor in the energy market. In 2016, American coal plants decreased production capacity by 13,000 MW after the Clean Power Plan introduction in 2015.
Chinese-manufactured solar panels are cheaper than in the past. Installation time is reduced as the panels “snap together”. The cost of installation labor has declined thanks to the new solar panels and start-ups. Improved wind turbine technology has led to efficient and cost-effective wind energy production.
Coal is still the major source of energy in underdeveloped nations, and it’s required for steel production. Coal exports markets will exist if there is no limit on carbon emissions. Well-funded carbon manufacturers can consider the possibilities of carbon capture and storage(CCS) so emissions can be reduced. Most coal producers have not adopted the CCS technology.
Investors are no longer investing in coal stocks. The coal industry will continue declining. Federal and state governments should give a subsidy or tax break to companies producing clean energy. Go To This Page for more information.
